Dolores Ione Filzen (Hovda), born on July 9, 1923, to Clayber and Mathilda Hovda in Stanley, North Dakota, peacefully passed away on September 23, 2023, at Sacred Heart Hospital due to complications from a stroke and COVID-19.
Dolores spent her early years on a farm in Stanley, ND, where she was the eldest of five siblings, all of whom preceded her in death. Her unwavering determination led her to leave her small hometown temporarily, seeking opportunities to complete her high school education and attend business college. It was during this time that she crossed paths with Donald Filzen at a dance, and their love story began. On October 16, 1944, they became husband and wife in Ross, ND, and remained together until Donald's passing in 1972.
The couple relocated to Bellingham, where they welcomed three beloved children into their lives. Later, they settled in Spokane, WA, where Dolores established her home for the next seven decades. During this time she married (and divorced) Ernie Lerum and helped raise his five children. He and his daughter Julie Detlaff also preceded her in death.
Dolores dedicated the majority of her career to working for a paper company, initially known as Blake, Moffitt & Towne, later acquired by Unisource, from where she eventually retired. Her life was marked by her unwavering commitment to being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, always placing the needs of others above her own. Dolores's enduring can-do spirit was a beacon of resilience, regardless of the challenges life presented. In her presence, there was always an abundance of good food and joyous moments. This year, she was fortunate to experience a delightful summer, which included her granddaughter's wedding, an extended stay with her daughter, and the celebration of her 100th birthday, a joyous family reunion.
Dolores is survived by her twin daughters, Patty Hill (Ron) and Diane Schauer (Bill), and her son, Jim Filzen (Bev). Her legacy also lives on through her cherished grandchildren, Mickie Smith, Greg Hill, Brenda Rendon, Jayme Filzen, and Josh Filzen, along with six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Additionally, she leaves behind four stepchildren, Barbara Finch, Linda Ruland, Jim Lerum, and Al Lerum, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Dolores's remarkable life will take place on October 28th, from 1-4pm, at Rockwood Lane. Join us in honoring the memory of this extraordinary woman who touched the lives of many with her boundless love and unwavering spirit.
