Carl A. Schultz

Carl A. Schultz passed away peacefully on October2, 2013, in Spokane, WA after a long battle with cancer. Carl, the oldest of the two boys, was born on December 2, 1928 to Carl and Sybil Schultz in Centralia, WA . After graduating from Eastern Washington University, Carl served in The United States Army, which included time in the Korean War. Carl was a natural leader and took pride in serving other. His sense of morals and work ethic were a model for all. Just before leaving to serve our nation, Carl married Linda Rieger, his beloved wife of 61 years.

Carl enjoyed a 40 year career in public education, serving junior-high and senior-high school students. His work spanned the Marlin, Almira, Rosalia and Spokane School Districts. Carl's service included work as a coach, teacher, athletic director, and administrator. In the early years of his educational career, he did it all...drove a school bus, acted as janitor, principal and taught multi ages within one room. He showed terrrific attention to detail and had high expectations for students. In 1993, Carl was inducted into the Washington State Athletic Director's Hall of Fame for his contributions to athletic programs in our state. Many of these people remained in contact with Carl and he was delighted to bump into them and "catch up" at the grocery store, sporting events, principal breakfasts, or on trips.

Outside of work, family and community service was very important to Carl. He spent many hours supporting youth deveolopment in the Boy Scoutts. He would be the first to assist someone in need or lend an helping hand. He was the neighborhood snow plow man, faithfully shoveling driveways and sidewalks. Carl also looked forward to the family's summer vacations, which included visits to Sullivan Lake and trips across the western United States.

Lifelong interest in United States history naturally lead Carl and Linda to positions as tour guides for the Corbin Senior Center. Their tours spanned the continental United States and provided addition opportunities for his passion for education. Favorite destinations included the Historic Liberty Trail and the Northeastern United States. Together they visited all 50 states and all Canadian provinces.

Carl was an active membery at Millwood Presbyterian Church where he participated on committees and the Navigators. He especially enjoyed his fellowship experience with the Monday Morning cleaning crew.

Carl is survived by Linda, his wife of 61 years; his brother, Lyle (Gail), three children, Michael (Nancy), Karen (Joey), and David (Heather); and seven grandchildren, Ashley, Andrew, Sarah, Christopher, Garret, Hannah and Jacob. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt "thanks" to the Hospice of Spokane and the nurses at Rockwood Cancer Care for their care, kindness and compassion during a difficult journey. A visitation will be held Friday, October 11th from 4:00-8:00pm and Saturday, October 12th from 9:00am to 10:00am at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home, 1306 N. Pines Rd. Spokane Valley. A Memorial Service will be held at Millwood Presbyterian Church on Saturday October 12th, at 2:00pm. Contributions in honor of Carl may be sent to Millwood Presbyterian Church and /or Hospice of Spokane.
