Viola Maxine McGarry

Viola Maxine Estes McGarry was born on November 6, 1931 at Blue Creek, WA and left this world on March 29, 2010. She was the second of Marshall and Iva Estes’ eight children. She is survived by her 3 brothers and four sisters, her children, Barbara Maruska (Ron), Dennis McGarry, Marcia Matthaei (Dick), Shannon Moen (Dennis), Mary Patterson, and Amy McGarry (Mustapha), her 19 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband of 61 years, James, and daughter, Susan.

Viola grew up at Blue Creek, Chewelah, and Northport, WA where she met her future husband, James. Following James’ work with the UPRR, the family lived in Ayer Junction, Marengo/Ritzville, and Athena, OR, until they eventually settled in the Spokane Valley. Her family, her children, and grand children were the center of her life and she became the mother to a community of children. Viola never met a stranger. Her home was always open, and a meal was always offered. We will miss you Grandma ChooChoo.

Funeral mass will be April 7, at 11:00am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 304 S. Adams Rd. with a reception following. Donations can be made in Viola’s name to Hospice of Spokane, Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Race for the Cure, or Alzheimer’s Association
