After graduating from Grand Coulee High School in 1950, Leon served his country with the U.S. Army as an artillery mechanic in the Korean War. When he returned from Korea, Leon chose a career as a Structural Iron Worker joining Local 14 in Spokane.
Leon met the love of his life, Elma Riedlinger. They married in 1956. Together, they had four children: Tina, Terry, Tim and Traci.
Leon was a life member of Orchard Masonic Lodge #200 and the Scottish Rite of the Valley of Spokane. He was an avid golfer and elk hunter, spending a week or two every fall in the Blue Mountains with family and friends in pursuit of big game. He was a lifelong hockey fan and season ticket holder of the Spokane Chiefs hockey team
After his retirement in 1994 Leon enjoyed traveling, making many trips to Seattle, Tri-Cities and Alberta to visit family. On many occasions Leon and Elma took one of the grandchildren with them.
He is preceded in death by his wife Elma; parents, Preston and Minnie Shatto; brothers, Gary, Marvin, Rollin, Don; and sister, Bonnie.
Leon is survived by his children; Tina (George) Banning, Terry (Nancy) Shatto, Tim (Julie) Shatto and Traci (Steve) Lund, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also, he is survived by his siblings Verlyn Shatto, Royce Shatto, Melva Shatto, Anita (Jim) Andrews and Shirley (Jerry) Goetz.
A Memorial service will take place on Saturday May 2nd, 2015 at Opportunity Presbyterian Church in Spokane Valley, Washington at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers Leon requested that donations be made to the Spokane Shriners Hospital.
