Edward Jay Schuh (Ed/Eddie), a lifelong resident of Spokane, WA, passed away at his home July 21, 2022 at 96 years old. Born at the family home in Spokane, WA on October 24, 1925 to Edward John and Minnie Schuh (Laturno), he was drafted into the US Army in 1943.
After his return, he married Dorothea Warriner on August 17, 1947. During the nearly 60 years they were married, they raised two children, Jay Edward Schuh and Janet Elaine Burger.
Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, Edward John and Minnie Schuh (Laturno); his wife, Dorothea Schuh (Warriner); son Jay Schuh (Wanda); brother, William (Bill) Schuh; sisters Mabel Carter, Dorothy (Dot) Bowen, and Inez McKinley. He is survived by his daughter, Janet Burger (Robert); daughter in law Wanda Holcomb (Ralph); Grandchildren Betsy Rau, Gary Schuh, Bonnie Miya, and Kelly Buckley; Great-grandchildren Annemarie and Jack Rau, Megan Miya, and Maggie and Abby Buckley; along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
While working at Caulkins Manufacturing, he and his lifelong friend, Bob Burger were drafted into the US Army. Eddie served as a Jeep Driver, running a motor pool throughout Europe. He was a decorated WWII US Army veteran (89th Infantry – “The Rolling W”) involved in the overrunning of Ohrdruf, the first concentration camp liberated by US troops in Nazi Germany. He earned multiple awards including the Bronze Star Medal for his “heroic or meritorious achievement or service.”
After returning from service in the US Army, he worked for his father at the family business, Dishman Concrete Products, Inc. Following his father's retirement, he and his brother, Bill, purchased the business. They successfully operated Dishman Concrete until they both retired in 1987.
He and Dorothea enjoyed many retirement years together in the company of their family, traveling whenever possible, and enjoying the rewards of their life's work. Eddie continued to embrace every minute with his family after Dorothea’s passing.
Eddie was always very humble about his service and his accomplishments, not often sharing his military experiences until his later years. He was well-known for his witty sense of humor, always willing to step up and help anyone in the community, and for his kind, positive and encouraging words. Being such a humble and thoughtful person who led by example, when he noticed anyone struggling, Eddie always took action to lift them up.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 3rd, 11 am, at Thornhill Valley Chapel, 1400 S Pines Rd, Spokane Valley, WA, with a funeral service at noon. Graveside services with military honors will be held the same day at 2:30 pm at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Online condolences may be expressed at ThornhillValley.com.
