Sally was born in The Bronx, NY to William and Anna (nee Collins) Hanley. She attended St. Nicolas of Tolentine High School where she was the captain of the basketball team. She was a lefty with a mean hook shot. Sally attended Fordham University. She worked at New York Telephone and then at Deering-Milleken where she met her husband Jim. She lived in New York City until she moved to Sparta, NJ in 1971.
She resided in Delaware from 1995 until returning to NJ in 2013. During Sally’s years in Sparta she volunteered at her children’s grammar and high schools. She loved being around family and friends and she hosted many holidays surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Sally was the receptionist at Kovach, Fitzgibbons and Goovaerts Law firm in Franklin, NJ from 1987 to 1995.
Sally is predeceased by her beloved husband of 56 years, James Patrick McGrath, her sister’s Julia (Sheila) Cardinal, Anne Bradley and her brother James Hanley. She is survived by her brother-in-law Charles McGrath of Warwick, R.I., her children, Christopher McGrath of Sparta, NJ, Terence and his, wife Robyn of Neptune, NJ; Susan McGrath of Dunedin, Fl. Sally McGrath of Hoboken, NJ; Kathryn Regan and her husband Joseph of Milwaukee, WI; Brian McGrath of Hoboken NJ; and daughter Elizabeth McGrath and her fiancée Robert Provenzano of Roselle Park NJ. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren: Shannon, Connor, Kyle, Kathleen, Richard and Bridgette, and many nieces and nephews. Sally will be remembered by all who knew and loved her for her infectious laugh and constant smile.
Friends may call Saturday, February 12th, 2022 for a memorial service from 9-11 a.m., Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St., Sparta, NJ 07871. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:30 am Saturday at Our Lady of the Lake Church, 294 Sparta Ave., Sparta, NJ.
