We also imagine the joy he feels upon greeting his parents, sister, and brother-in-law in heaven, and the relief he felt upon being released from the physical body that had struggled to carry on for these last few years.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Nancy Speruta, his sons, Michael and Mark, their wives, Dawn and Monica, his stepchildren Nicole and Melissa, his grandchildren and the scores of family and friends who adored him. It should also be noted, however, that everyone who interacted with Mike during his weekly ventures to his favorite shops will miss his raucous laugh, good humor, and generous spirit. Mike didn’t just run errands, he visited friends, he glad-handed strangers, he shined his light, and we could all just be lucky enough to be around to absorb it.
Born in Brooklyn, NY (and don’t you forget it) Mike moved to Lindenhurst, Long Island when he was 8. There he would attend school, begin to work, and eventually begin a family. His early career was with Otis Elevators in New York City, but most of his work life was spent with the Long Island Railroad where his coworkers became some of his closest friends. He was also an auxiliary police officer with the town of Lindenhurst.
While he had outside interests like hunting, playing cards, watching movies, and cheering on the Mets, there was never anything more important than family. When he was re-married to Nancy in 1996, he gained a whole other extended family who embraced him from the moment he sauntered in with his mischievous smile and love of some good Italian cooking.
Often people will share condolences when they hear of someone passing away. They remind us that their memory may be a blessing. We were indeed blessed to have Mikey here on earth with us, to hear his laugh, to hold his hand, to be loved so deeply by a man who had so much to give to family, to friends and to the strangers he encountered. Whatever you called him, Mike, Pop, Mikey, Papa or Sperut, you are likely wondering what your world will look like without him in it.
We pray for his peace while holding his memory in our hearts and we say our goodbyes with his singularly identifiable laugh echoing in our ears. When his heart failed that Sunday, it wasn’t from lack of loving.
