Born in Scranton, PA, Laura came to Lake Mohawk in 1976, where she graduated from Sparta High School. She then graduated with Honors from Marywood College in 1982, and embarked on her 42 year passion of educating our youth. Her teaching brought her to Honolulu, Hawaii, Chevy Chase, Maryland, and eventually back to her hometown of Sparta in 2002, where she settled in at the Hilltop Country Day School as Head of School. Laura has made a lasting impression on so many children over her career and if you asked her, every child was a perfect student and a blessing to have in the school.
As an avid gardener, Laura became interested in honey bees and completed her Apprentice Beekeeping Certificate. She was pursuing a Masters Certificate in Beekeeping from the University of Montana.
Laura was a devoted mother to her two children, Harrison and Emma D’Amico of Sparta, a loving big sister to her brothers, Kevin McGee (Pam) of Kemah Lake, NJ and Mark McGee (Michele) of Sula, Montana, and an adoring aunt to her niece April and her grandnephew Liam of St. Johns, FL, who she spoiled with books, puzzles and other educational goodies.
As we reflect about the times we have spent with Laura, she would tell us how important it is that we ensure that our children receive the best education possible, ensure every child has a chance, a second chance, a third, and as many as it takes to provide each and every child with the tools and skills they need to be happy and successful.
Visitation for Laura will be held Sunday, March 10th from 1 – 5PM at Goble Funeral Home 22 Main St., Sparta, NJ 07871. Funeral mass will be celebrated 12 noon Monday, March 11th at Our Lady of the Lake Church 294 S. Sparta Ave., Sparta, NJ 07871. Interment will immediately follow at Sparta Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers please plant some flowers this spring, let your dandelions grow, and feed the bees!
