Born in rural Germany to Hans Sr and Gerda Thomann, Hans Jr moved to New York City at the age of seven. He quickly learned English and unsurprisingly excelled academically, getting accepted into the prestigious Brooklyn Tech for high school and receiving a full scholarship to Stony Brook University. He completed a PhD in physical chemistry, although he often remarked about how difficult it was to choose among the scientific disciplines. Hans spent his career as a valued and beloved scientist at ExxonMobil where his colleagues knew him for his extraordinary intelligence, infectious love for learning, and unparalleled work ethic. He authored numerous papers, was granted many patents, and collaborated with prestigious universities worldwide. He had a deep understanding for a vast number of technical topics and a mind that didn’t rest. He even went on to earn an MBA while working full time and raising three kids with his wife.
At home, Hans could be found tackling big projects such as finishing the basement or building the deck, always with one of his daughters in tow, and enjoying classical or rock music in the background. Hans loved his wife’s home cooked meals, and he enjoyed traveling with his family to Disney World, challenging his daughters to tennis matches, and being the first person on the ski lift. Hans was happiest casually chatting with friends about scientific theories, reading an intense nonfiction book outside, cracking dad jokes with his daughters over Thai food, and spending time with his parents. A few days before his death, Hans shared with his daughter that he was planning to go to medical school. Those who knew Hans would smile because that is exactly the kind of thing Hans Thomann would plan to do in retirement.
Hans is survived by his daughters, Julie (Shakher), Lauren, and Claire, as well as many family and friends.
The family requests that contributions in Hans’ memory be made to The America Association for the Advancement of Science by clicking the link below.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
