

Lake Hopatcong, NJ- Dr. Arthur F. Clarke, III died on May 23, 2017, He was 64 years old. Arthur was born in Newark, NJ to Arthur F., Jr, and Regina C. (McGovern) Clarke. He graduated from West Babylon High School in 1970, earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1974 from Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ and his doctorate of optometry at SUNY School of Optometry in New York City. Arthur taught math and science for sixteen years in the Hopatcong school district, teaching at Durban Avenue School and the Hopatcong Middle School. In 1993, he left the teaching profession to pursue his medical degree. After graduating medical school, Arthur organized Hopatcong Eye Care where he had practiced for the last 20 years.
Arthur had a passion for lifeguarding since he was fifteen years old. He currently worked as the Seasonal Water Safety Supervisor, in charge of the Northwest NJ State Parks, for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Also during his lifetime, Arthur worked as a lifeguard at Lake Hopatcong, Island Beach State Park, and Seaside Park at the NJ shore, as well as in San Diego, California and Hollywood, Florida. He was a member of the United States Lifesaving Association.
Arthur had a special love for the lake where he lived virtually all his life, during summers as a child and full time for the last forty plus years. He currently served as a Alternate Commissioner for the Lake Hopatcong Commission which is responsible for environmental programs that maintain the quality of the lake.
Predeceasing Arthur is his father, Arthur F. Jr, and his brother, George J. Clarke. Surviving him is his mother; Regina C Clarke, a brother; Michael J. Clarke and sister-in-law Carol A. Clarke of Sparta, and niece Kelly A. Clarke and nephews Brian M. and Jonathan P. Clarke. Friends and family are invited Tuesday May 30, 3-5pm and 7-9pm to Goble Funeral Home 22 Main Street Sparta, NJ 07871. A Wednesday Mass will be celebrated at 10:30am at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church 204 Espanong Rd Lake Hopatcong, NJ 07849 followed by interment at Sparta Cemetery.
