Tyler was born in Olathe, Kansas and graduated from DeSoto High School. He had been a volunteer in the Johnson County Fire Department in Kansas. Upon moving to North Carolina he was a firefighter in the Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Department. He then became the Chief of the Southport Rescue Squad. When the Southport Rescue Squad and the Southport Fire Department merged, he became the Deputy Chief and then Assistant Chief in the Southport Fire Department. He had also served with the Oak Island Fire and Rescue, Pender County Fire and Rescue, and worked part-time with Brunswick County EMS as an AEMT. Tyler had also been an EMT instructor at Brunswick Community College. Most recently, he was also a Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage Real Estate. Tyler had won several awards as a firefighter, including multiple officer of the year and outstanding service and dedication awards. He will be remembered for his drive, compassion, protective nature, natural leadership, and always putting family and friends first. Tyler’s immense love for his children will live on forever.
Tyler is survived by his wife Cassandra Johnson; two children, Hailey Johnson and Weston Johnson; father, Bob Johnson and partner Brenda Ellis; his grandmother, Joan Kinney; four siblings, Kaitlin Johnson, Garret Johnson and wife Lindsey (their children, Jessa and Gavin), Tori Johnson, and Saylor Johnson; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Eric and Mary Shilling; and many other extended family members.
Tyler joined with those in heaven that predeceased him, his mother, Kristin Johnson; paternal grandparents, Robert W. and Adaline Johnson; and maternal grandparents, Chuck and Lois Kinney.
A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at Southport Baptist Church at 3:00 pm with Reverend Charles A. Drew officiating. The family will have visitation prior to the service at the church from 1:00 pm until 2:45pm.
