Born November 22, 1944 to the late Doris Matthews and Troy Wilson Davis, Sr. Troy enjoyed an idyllic youth in the beautiful small town of Clinton, NC where he was born and where he resided until going off to college.
During his years at Clinton High School he excelled and was on the high school Annual Committee, member of the Key Club, Monogram Club, Glee Club, Teenage Club and the Photography Club. He also served as Freshman Class Officer President, Senior Class Officer Treasurer, and Citizen of the Week, as well as participating in band, baseball and football.
Despite his busy school schedule and extracurricular activities, Troy still awakened early every morning to deliver the local newspaper via bicycle.
Following high school graduation in 1963 he furthered his education at Fayetteville Technical Institute (Fayetteville Technical Community College) where he earned a two-year Civil Engineering Technology degree, went on to serve four years in the United States Air Force, and then began a civil engineering career with the NCDOT Highway Division.
In the early 1970s, after his Mother moved to Long Beach, NC, and wanting to be close to her, Troy and his first wife, the late Barbara Jean Smith, moved to the Island.
Upon arrival in Long Beach he began working in real estate, home construction, and was proprietor of the popular “Fireside Restaurant” which served - according to those who dined there – great Italian food and excellent steaks.
In the late 1970s Troy began his career with the Town of Long Beach where he served as Public Works Director until later being promoted to Planning Director. During these years he designed and was overseer of construction for the Scenic Walkway and the Cabana, both of which are still enjoyed by locals and tourists to this day.
He left public service for private industry in the late 1980s, during which time he managed the sewer system installation projects for the City of Clinton and the Town of Yaupon Beach.
After many years, he returned to public service when he was hired by the Town of Oak Island as the wastewater construction project manager and he continued in this role until its completion in 2011.
Troy also served his community as one of four appointees to the Charter Group for Consolidation Talks (1975), Chairman of the2nd Annual Octoberfest (1975), Long Beach Volunteer Fireman (1983), Wastewater Quality Task Force (1995) and, lastly, Cape Fear Resource Conservation & Development Board (2014 – 2019).
Troy loved people, loved Oak Island, loved Oak Island’s citizens, and while employed there, he loved his Town of Oak Island co-workers; but what he loved most was public service.
On a personal note, Troy was always kind and mannerly, a true southern gentleman, ever-devoted husband, shining example to his four beautiful children, and a beautiful Christian human being.
In times of life’s inevitable betrayals, his motto always remained, “Love them anyway,” and that, he did.
Troy leaves to forever cherish his memory his wife of 32 years, Joy Barrow Davis; daughter, Cheri Davis Lassiter (Marty) of Cornelius NC; sons, Michael Scott Davis (Jodi) of New Bern NC, Christopher Lewis Davis (Kristin) of Apex NC, and Christian Luke Davis (BB) of Oak Island NC; grandchildren, Trey Lassiter, Hannah Lassiter, Sydney Lassiter, Ryan Davis, Drew Davis, Alexander Troy Davis, Audrey Davis, Arden Davis; devoted brother, Glenn Davis (Joan) of Lago Vista TX; loving mother-in-law, Joyce King; sisters-in-law, Ann King Squier (Eric) and Mae Parsons (Boyd); brother-in-law Kenny Barrow (Debbie); nieces, Pamela Hodges Domanski, Tonya Currie and Toni Baker; nephews, Walker Wade Barrow, Trevor Davis (Danielle), Matthew Davis (Andrea), Tommy Woodell, Brian Parsons, Gregory Parsons, Jimmy Hubbard and Travis Hubbard; great nephews, Fitz Davis, Graham Davis, Benjamin Davis and William Davis; many beloved aunts and cousins; special lifelong friend, Jay Woody (Michele) of Hale, Cheshire, United Kingdom and, last, but not at all least, his devoted pets, “Cat-Cat” Davis and Turbo “Killer” Davis.
