He was born in Philadelphia, PA on August 2, 1939 to Burdette Cleveland Sawyer and Lillian Stillings Sawyer. At the age of 20, he joined the U.S Navy, where he met and married the love of his life, Debbie Sawyer. He spent the next 20 plus years serving his country aboard various aircraft carriers before retiring in 1979 and moving his family to settle in Southport. He spent 10 years running the family owned dry cleaning business, the Glamorama, before retiring for good.
Mr. Sawyer is survived by his three children, B.J. Sawyer, of Boling Spring Lake, Michelle Sawyer of Westport, CT and Renee Reed of Oak Island; his grandchildren Zachary Dalton, of Southport, Jessica Bettinghaus of Florida and Jordan Reed of Oak Island; his daughter-in-law Roxieanna Sawyer and various other nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Simmons Sawyer, his parents, Burdette and Lillian Sawyer, his brother Danny Sawyer and his sister Jessie Barnes.
Due to his military service, Mr. Sawyer will be buried at sea by the US Navy with full military honors.
