Maryann was born April 1, 1942, daughter of the late John and Anna Sokol. She became a Registered Nurse in 1967 after graduating from Seton Hall University. Maryann worked with one of the first open heart surgery teams in New Jersey. She taught nursing at the college level in NJ, including Staten Island Community College. Mrs. Canu was also a school nurse at a Cerebral Palsy elementary school and in the Kinnelon School System. She taught in the CNA program at Brunswick Community College. Some of her interests included gardening, art, cake decorating, Sudoku, holistic nursing, and she was an avid golfer.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Michael Canu; five children, Christine Secone and husband Anthony, Jennifer Dokish and husband Chris, Elizabeth Simmons and husband Fred, Cathy Canu, and Michael Canu, Jr. and wife Shannon; four grandchildren, Melissa Leonor, Michael A. Canu, Chyanne Secone, and Cayla Secone; four great-grandchildren, Kayden, Caleb, Riley, and Addison; two sisters, Irene Kostovich and Carol Breen and husband John; and her dog, Hachi. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Sokol.
The funeral mass will be held at noon on Friday, January 6, 2022 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport.
