Mary and her husband John celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 20th. They moved to St. James 18 years ago from New Fairfield CT, after previously living in New City NY. She is also survived by her daughter Suzie Martin of Dunwoody GA, son Dan Young and his wife Tricia of Stratford CT, and daughter Kathie Smarick and her husband Andy of Kent Island MD. Mary's true joy came from being Grandma to Katie, Jack, Brady, Greg, Shay, Peter, Will, Eddie, and Maisie, ranging in age from 21 to 3 years old. She is also survived by her brother Jim Wynne and his wife Claire and her brother Raymond Wynne. She is predeceased by her brother Jack and his wife Barbara.
Mary grew up in The Bronx and was a graduate of St. Vincent's Nursing School in New York City. She was a nurse at St. Vincent's Hospital and Nyack (NY) Hospital. She remained active in nursing as she raised her children, working part-time as a school nurse and as a clinical instructor at Rockland Community College.
Always serving her community, Mary worked with a variety of organizations in Brunswick County, including New Hope Clinic, the CIS Thrift Shop, and the Interfaith Food Pantry. Mary had a strong faith throughout her life and was a member of Sacred Heart Church. Mary was the first to help a friend or neighbor in need in any way she could, whether it be providing a ride, a meal, or just company and support.
Mary passed away 10 days after suffering a massive stroke. Her family expresses deep gratitude to the wonderful nurses and doctors of Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach for their outstanding care and compassion during her final days.
A funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport on Tuesday, November 24, at 2:00pm with Reverend Trent Watts officiating. A reception will follow at the church.
