He was born December 4, 1967 and grew up in Williamsport, PA and Thomasville, NC. He developed an early interest in nature and the outdoors. He earned his degree in Environmental Science at UNC -Wilmington, and became an expert on fish as well as being well versed in many other subjects. He could have been a Jeopardy champion! He worked as a curator at the Fort Fisher and Raleigh Aquariums as well as the state aquarium in Biloxi, MS. The Hurricane Katrina storm surge came within a foot his front door. He was a denizen of waters where he lived and spent much of his life boating, kayaking, and fishing. He called Southport, the Cape Fear River, and Black River, home. Avidly exploring the areas backwaters. Above all, Big Joe, as he was called, loved everybody and everybody loved him. He was a gregarious fixture around Wilmington and many knew him. Unfortunately powerful forces overwhelmed him and he left this earth abruptly and all too soon. Though he now paddles the pristine water of a more beautiful dimension, he will be sadly and sorely missed by his family and those he touched.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
