Johnie was born June 23, 1928 in Brunswick County, son of the late Johnie William Vereen, Sr. and Hazel Gray Vereen. He was a founding member of The Point Church of Southport. In 1946, Johnie graduated from the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. He served for 30 years in the US Merchant Marines, during three wars, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Mr. Vereen served as a Second Lieutenant in the US Navy and has honorable discharges from the US Navy, US Coast Guard, and USMC. Johnie owned one of the first businesses on Long Beach, the Red and White Grocery Store which later became The General Store.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Susan Warth Vereen; a son, Erich Vereen and wife Sheri; and a grandson, Sheridan Vereen. He was preceded in death by his son, Johnie Vereen, III; a brother, Wayland Vereen; and a sister, Joyce Formyduval.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
