John William "Billy" Potter, age 80, of and born and raised in Southport, North Carolina passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2023. He was born on February 20, 1943 to the late Robert Monroe Potter and Juanita Winifred Cooker.
Left to cherish his memory are the love of his life and wife, Betty Lewis Potter; his daughter, Anita King and her husband Dallas of Boiling Spring Lake; his son, William Joseph Potter and his wife Penny of Durham, NC; his brother, Robert Wayne Potter of South Carolina; grandchildren, Leanne King of Wilmington, Teresa King of Leland and Dallas King Jr. of Bolivia; great grandchildren, William Hart, Brantley King, Dustin King, Colton King and Linda King; and a whole host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.
He was preceded in passing by his sisters, Claire Wilkins, Una "Tootsie" Smith, Louise George and Ella Mae Burris.
"Billy" loved the water and made a living as a pilot and boat captain. He ran several charter boats, fish boats and shrimpers. He also helped to literally reshape our coast by serving as the captain of a survey boat for dredging companies.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, June 10, 2023 at 4 p.m. in the Peacock, Newnam & White Chapel. A visitation with Family & Friends will be held from 3 p.m. until 3:55 p.m. prior to the service.
