Dennis was born June 3, 1959 in Southport, North Carolina, son of the late Joseph and Charlotte Walton.
Dennis was a lifelong resident of the Southport area. Many knew him with a guitar always in-hand, he was Southport’s own “Guitar Man.” Dennis was a creative of all sorts, from his well-known musical abilities to his illustrations, and written word. He had the “gift of gab;" you’d find hours gone by quickly with warm, insightful, deep conversations - he held love and respect for people of all walks of life. Dennis had the ability to make a person feel important. He was deeply loyal to those he loved. He had a love for knowledge, knowledge about the inner workings of people, history, music, weather patterns – he was a teacher by nature. Dennis held a lot of jobs in his life, from working at Brown & Root to Captain of the first Bald Head Island Ferry, but the most influential was working in the Southport Community with his grandfather, Ray Spencer, as a handyman and painter. His favorite role after dad, husband, and brother, was musician. He was an outstanding musician, lead guitarist and vocalist for several bands throughout his life. He was born and raised in Southport and seemed to know everyone and was a friend to all. Dennis’ greatest strength was that he never met a stranger.
Heroes get remembered. Legends never die.
Dennis loved his family and was a devoted husband. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Walton; four children, Anna Ramsey, Joey Walton, Ari Walton, and Lauren Muyshondt and husband Jean-Paul; three grandchildren, Christina Walton, Halah Ramsey, and Charlotte Walton Malpass; a grandchild yet to be born; two brothers, Randy Walton and wife Kathy, and Mike Walton and husband David; a sister, Pam Johnson and husband Van; an aunt, Dot Smith; and several nieces and nephews who he loved dearly.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathy Amborn Walton.
A celebration of his life will be held at 6:30 pm on Sunday, April 13, 2025 at the Southport Community Building. The doors for the venue will open at 6:00 pm, and friends and family are welcome to visit during that time.
