Stanley R. Wasel, Jr, (81) of Southington passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at The Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain surrounded by his devoted family. He was the beloved husband of Marjorie (Freeland) Wasel with whom he shared 22 wonderful and happy years before his passing. Stan was born to the late Stanley L. and Jenny (Kasinak) Wasel on November 24, 1942, in Bridgeport. As their only child, he became their pride and joy. In Stan’s early years he lived in Darien where his parents owned and managed the Post Restaurant and later in Kensington where they owned and managed the Dairy Bar. After graduating from New Britain High School, Stan joined the Air Force (1961-1964) and served as a Nuclear Weapons Specialist in Southeast Asia in the early days of the Vietnam War and later at Westover Air Base during the Cuban Missile Crisis. When returning home he married Judith Unwin and started their family in New Britain. He had a lengthy career as an electrician, eventually becoming plant manager for Charles W. House & Sons before retiring in 1999.
In addition to his wife, he leaves his three children, Scott Wasel and wife Laurie of Wolcott, Erik Wasel and wife June of Turin, New York and New Hartford and Amy Vilcinskas and husband Mark of Marlborough; nine grandchildren, Keri, Todd, Ashley, Emily, Meagan, Ryan, Andrew, Larissa, and Lana; three great grandchildren, Cassie, Ian, and Liam. He was predeceased by his daughter Reid Gamache and his first wife Judith (Unwin) Wasel.
Stan was an avid sports buff, enjoying skiing, golfing, snowmobiling and earlier in his life, cyclist contributing to his label “the cool grandpa” by his family. As a member and past President of Mountain Laurel Ski Club in New Britain he was committed to supporting its success through sharing his passion for skiing and spreading that passion to all of those who knew him. It has been said: “some talk, some throw out ideas and Stan did both of those for sure, but most of all, he was always one of those who’d show up to make it happen.”
His legacy of love, kindness, and devotion to his family will be cherished and continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have been a part of his life. His children and grandchildren will fondly look back upon memories of the VT house, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and ice skating and will bring lessons learned forward in their own families.
