Born in Waterbury on October 25, 1929, she was the daughter of the late James A. and Marion L. (Downey) Murphy. In 1951 she earned a Bachelor?s degree in Physical Education at the University of CT where she participated in many sports including softball. She graduated from the University of Maine in 1957 with a Masters in education and later earned her post graduate teaching certificate at Southern CT State University.
Marion was a teacher in the Waterbury School system for 32 years, primarily at Bucks Hill School. She was a member of the Waterbury Teachers Association and the Retired WTA. She was an avid golfer and member of the Farmingbury Hills Women?s Golf Association, winning several golf tournaments including one in Hawaii. She was extremely generous donating to countless charities and very sociable having many friends including several former students.
Marion is survived by her twin sister Deborah Hitchcock of Waterbury, a sister in law Marion ?Mickey? Murphy of West Hartford and was known as ?Aunt Sheila? to many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers James Murphy Jr., John F. Murphy and sisters Kathleen Murphy and Elizabeth Lawler.
Funeral Mass will be Friday 11 AM at St. Pius X Church in Wolcott followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday morning from 8:30 to 10:30 AM at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home 690 Woodtick Rd. in Wolcott.
