Mr. Lawrence Francis Horan, "Larry", 62, beloved husband and father, entered peacefully into his eternal rest, at home, surrounded by his loving wife and children, on Tuesday, July 10, 2007. He fought a long courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Horan was a life-long resident of Waterbury, having grown up in the Town Plot section of the city. He was a graduate of B.W.Tinker Elementary School and Warren F. Kaynor Technical School. Until his retirement in 2005, he was a Tool & Die Maker for more than 35 Years at ITW Anchor Stamping, formerly Anchor Fasteners, of Waterbury.
Because of his French Heritage, Larry was a Communicant of St. Anne's Church for most of his life. When it came time for his children to attend school, he and his family became active members of St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Oakville, where he served the Parish in many capacities. He was a Eucharistic Minister for several years. Larry brought Communion to the sick of the Parish, he was a member of the Parish Council, where he served as Parish Council President. As an active member of the Knights of Columbus, he worked on many projects to help the Parish and the community.
Mr. Horan was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, John F. Whelan Council #10865, in Waterbury, where he served as Grand Knight. He later joined Palos Council #35 and the 4th Degree Assembly, Rev. M.B. Roddan Assembly #108, of Bristol, Connecticut. Larry served as a member of the 4th Degree Color Guard, and also on the Fr. Barry 3rd Degree Team. Larry also served at the State Level, as District Deputy for six years, overseeing councils in Bristol, Terryville, Thomaston, Bethlehem, Cheshire, Wolcott, and Unionville. Through these appointments, he was fortunate to make many caring friends.
Mr. Horan was involved in Scouting with his son, from the time he was a Tiger Cub, right through his becoming an Eagle Scout. Larry served as an Assistant Scout Leader of Boy Scout Troop #140, of Oakville, Connecticut, for twelve years. As a Scout Leader, he served as a member of the Advancement Committee, was on the Eagle Scout Board of Review, he helped out at Camp Mattatuck for many years, was a member of the Archdiocese of Hartford Catholic Committee, and received the Bronze Pelican Medal. This is the second highest Catholic Award which can be received by an adult leader.
Larry was a devoted strong family man. He enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening in his spare time.
Larry will be remembered as a devoted son, husband, father, son-in-law, and friend. He is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Geraldine Donahue "Gerry" Horan. They celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary on June 26, 2007. He is also survived by his two children, his son, James Francis Horan, and his daughter, Courtney Therese Horan, both of Waterbury, his Mother-in-Law, Nancy McCarthy Donahue of Southington, and many caring friends. Mr. Horan is predeceased by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Francis Horan, and his Father-in-Law, James Donahue.
The family would like to thank all of the Physicians and staff at the Harold Leever Cancer Center, the CT Hospice, The Knights of Columbus, many family and friends who were so helpful and supportive during this difficult time. Funeral will be Saturday 9AM from The DellaVecchia Funeral Home 690 Woodtick Rd. in Wolcott to The Shrine of St. Anne for a Mass at 10 AM. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling Hours are Friday from 4 to 8 PM.
