Arnold W. Smith, 93 of Southington passed away on Friday, January 13, 2023 at Elim Park, Cheshire. He was the beloved husband of Joyce (Adams) Smith. He was born September 13, 1929 in Waterbury and was the son of the late Francis H. and Alice (Thiffault) Smith.
Arnold served with the U.S. Navy from 1947 to 1977, rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer of telecommunications. He served during the Korean War on the USS Mt. McKinley and the USS General Breckinridge. During the Vietnam War, he served on the USS Salem, the USS Coral Sea, the USS Raymond, and the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. His missions brought him to Hawaii, Japan, Washington, D.C., Newport Rhode Island, Brazil, France, Italy, and his retirement in Sterling, New Jersey. Arnold met Joyce, the love of his life of 68 years, also a US Navy veteran, in 1954 while she was working for the U.S. Armed Forces Police.
After the Navy, he would work until his retirement as VP of Telecommunications for Chase Manhattan Bank.
In addition to his wife he leaves his two daughters and sons-in-law, Rita and Dr. Matthew Masserman of Southington and Peggy and Frank Johns Jr. of Waterbury; grandson Benjamin Masserman of Southington; two sisters, Claudette Lennon of Windsor and Ginger Teach of CA along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Albert Smith and a sister Juanita Govain.
A memorial service for Arnold will be held on Wednesday, January 25th at 11 a.m. at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. Southington. His service will be TribuCast and can be attended remotely via link: https://client.tribucast.com/tcid/6779800011
