Our Loving husband, dad and grandfather passed away February 13, 2019 into the loving arms of Jesus. He couldn’t wait to see his daughter Dawn, who was waiting for him. Larry was born in Toledo, Ohio, to Charles Edward and Mary Louise Johnson on September 21, 1937. He served in the US Army from 1957 – 1963 as a combat engineer. Following his time in the service, he attended Huntington College in Indiana as well as Michigan State University. He went on to teach high school sciences for 33 years, first at Marion High School and then at Kent City High School. He loved to coach basketball, track, and he started the cross-country program at Kent City. He was also the advisor for the Ecology Club at Kent City. He was active in the bowling league at City Limits in Mason and loved spending Mondays and Fridays there. He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Karolyn (Freer) Johnson of Mason; children, Daron (Deborah) Johnson of Grand Rapids, Dean (Sheryl) Johnson of Leslie; DeAnne (Craig) Lobbezoo of Lowell; Grandchildren, Racheal (Trevor) Holloway, Matt, Lindsay and Logan Johnson, Brendan and Ben Lobbezoo, Gregory, Tristan and Kelsey Shimmons; brother, Dan Johnson of Kissimmee, Florida; sister, Virginia (Stan) Moran of Medfield, Massachusetts. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dawn Shimmons, and his sister Joann Kasten. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held Saturday, February 23rd at 3:00pm at Mason First Church of the Nazarene, Mason, Michigan. Family will receive visitors one hour prior to service. Memorial Contributions can be made to Mason 1st Church of the Nazarene to support scholarships for Connect Sports or Mason 1st Youth Group.
