James McConnell Arbuckle, age 97, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2024 at Ann’s Choice in Warminster, PA where he resided for the last 21 years. He was previously a resident of Huntingdon Valley, PA for 37 years.
Jim was born on January 30, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of James and Janie Arbuckle. He graduated from Olney High School in 1944. Upon graduation, he joined the Navy. Following two years of service, he earned the rank of Third-Class Aviation Ordnanceman. He was proud of his service in the Navy in support of the World War II conflict. Following the War, Jim began his college education at Penn State University under the GI Bill, eventually completing his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at Drexel University in 1956.
Jim’s career began as an electrical engineer at Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania for 35 years. Credited with developing the “Arbuckle Switch Box”, this was the first troubleshooting device of its kind enabling calls to be completed across Bell Telephone switching offices. Retiring from Bell, Jim extended his career, working as a civilian, for the US Navy, spending 13 years at Naval Air Development Center in Warminster, PA. In conjunction with these occupations, Jim served as a Director and Treasurer for the Feltonville/Cornerstone Building and Loan Association for 50 years, enabling Jim to provide a valuable service in the section of Philadelphia where he was raised.
Jim was very family oriented and displayed this to those he loved throughout the years. He was happy to have been a coach for both sons’ little league teams for eight years, providing support, guidance and encouragement during their childhood. His daughter was the princess of his eye and he radiated joy supporting her endeavors. As a very proud Grandfather, Jim loved attending the four grandchildren’s activities and sporting events.
Jim had many hobbies and interests. He loved the Phillies and Eagles, photography, golf and playing card games. He and Dorothy traveled extensively, even visiting the Holy Lands and the Egyptian Pyramids. In 2016, Jim had the opportunity to participate in the Bucks County Tour of Honor where a large group of WW II Veterans traveled to Washington, DC as USA heroes. Well into his 90’s, Jim annually visited Ocean City, NJ with his family. Church attendance and volunteer participation, were very important to Jim. For many years, he was an active member of the Huntingdon Valley United Methodist Church. Later, during his time at Ann’s Choice, he enjoyed chapel services.
In 2003, Jim and his wife, Dorothy were part of the first wave of residents to move into Ann’s Choice, designated as “Ann’s Choice Pioneers”.
James M. Arbuckle is survived by his children, Paul (Sandra) Arbuckle, Donna (Tom) Brigo and David (Darlene) Arbuckle; his grandchildren, Damian Arbuckle, Gina Brigo, Kevin Arbuckle and Laura Arbuckle; his great-granddaughter, Grace Swaby and his niece, Nancy (Michael) Rakus.
Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Dorothy F. Arbuckle, his parents, James and Janie Arbuckle, his sister, Dorothy Schimpf and his niece, Linda Schimpf.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Jim's visitation which will be held Saturday, April 27, 2024 from 11:00AM to 12:00PM in the main chapel at Ann's Choice, 30000 Ann's Choice Way, Warminster, Pennsylvania 18974, followed by the funeral service at 12:00PM. There will be a Private Interment at a Later Date - Washington Crossing National Cemetery.
