Hubert E. Harber, Jr. died on Monday, Sept 25, 2017 at his residence in Southampton. He was 82 years of age. Born in Iraan, Texas, he was the son of the late Louella and Hubert E. Harber Sr. He was lovingly raised by his father, his grandmother, Norris Hughes Harber, and his adopted mother, Heloise Hawkins Harber. Hubert was a Southampton resident for the past 28 years. He previously lived in West Chester, PA.
Mr. Harber was a graduate of Louisiana State University and received 2 Master’s degrees, one from University of Colorado, and one from Brown University. He was a professor of Astronomy at West Chester University, with a speciality in the history of ancient Mayan Astronomical records and techniques. He published several articles in Sky and Telescope Magazine and Science News in the 1970s, and was the author of an astronomy and star gazing guide for the Boy Scouts of America.
Hubert was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, in Newtown, PA. He was a builder of many things, including model planes, trains, and sailing ships, scrimshaw jewelry, and model train displays. He was an avid sailor for many years. He was a member of the Bucks County Radio Control Club, where he very much enjoyed flying, displaying, and discussing his hand built model planes. He was a problem solver who loved figuring things out.
Hubert was the beloved husband of Diane Wheeler Harber for 28 years. He was the devoted father of David Harber (Debra) of Las Vegas, NV and Norris Heintzelman (Mark) of Wilmington, DE. He was the stepfather of James M. Urban (Regina) of Randolph, NJ, Kenneth S. Urban of Sellersville, PA, and Gregory Urban (Helena) of Cinnaminson, NJ. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Alexi Harber, Sara Heintzelman, and Elizabeth Heintzelman.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday, October 6, 2017 from 9:30 to 10AM at St. Luke’s Episocopal Church, 100 Washington Ave, Newtown, PA 18940. His funeral service will be at 10AM. The interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Feasterville.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the American Heart Association.
