Gussie Starr Edmondson was the sixth of seven children born to Willie & Martha Starr in Coles Chapel, Oklahoma. Her parents, four brothers John Henry Clark, Atha, Earnest Starr and Wallace Starr and two sisters Bessie Mae Crump and Viola Perkins, precede her in death.
At an early age, the family moved to Chicago where she attended public school. She later attended Roosevelt College where she studied fashion. She was offered a job at MGM Studios and came to California. In California, she met and married Woodrow Orlando Edmondson. The union birthed a son, Don Paul, and a daughter, Garri Lynn. They too have preceded her in death.
She later worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District as a Teacher’s Assistant. She worked closely with several teachers at Normandie Avenue Elementary. Upon retiring, she began volunteering at The Luskin Orthopaedic Institute for Children where she accumulated over 4,500 hours of service. She was recently honored with the 2023 Exceptional Dedication and Commitment Award.
She was always looking for ways to help others. Therefore, she began volunteering at the Ahmanson Senior Center where she taught other members jewelry making, crafts and sewing. She was recognized in 2017 as an Older Americans Recognition Day Award Honoree.
Throughout her life, she was a committed servant to God’s kingdom. She was a faithful member of Second Baptist Church where she served in various ministries during her membership over the span of 70 years. She served in the nursery, choir, and on the hospitality committee. Her true passion in the church was serving as an usher where she could be found on her post each Sunday.
