Born on February 28, 1935, in Boston, and raised in Waban, MA. He was the youngest of three sons of George Lawrence Black and Caroline Stewart Black. He graduated from the Rivers Country Day School where he later served on the Board of Trustees, and from Norwich University, as a member of the “Magnificent Class of 1959”. He also served on the Norwich Alumni Council, Board of Fellows, and as Friend & Chairman of the 1959 Scholarship Fund.
He founded Progressive Insurance Planners, and formed Hollis, Perrin & Black Insurance Agency. He served as Vice President of New England Mutual Insurance Agents Association, and as Director of the Massachusetts Independent Insurance Agents Association.
He was active in football, basketball, and baseball programs where he coached and led the Newton Athletic Association’s Basketball League. He loved golf, tennis, and cooking. He was active in the Dennis Union Church as a member of the Board of Trustees and Church Councils. He was also active with the Church Auction as a member of the Pickup Crew.
He was predeceased by his first wife Emily (Gallo) Black and is survived by his wife, Judith Ann (Travers) Black, his son, William Adams Black, Jr. (Adam), his daughter, Susan (Black) Pietro, son-in-law, Paul Pietro, step children, Victoria and Mark Outerbridge, grandchildren, Connor Black, Gavin Black, Emily (Pietro) Quigley, and her husband, Kevin Quigley, John Pietro, Kerri Pietro, and great grandchildren, Caroline Quigley, and Claire Quigley.
There will be a family only graveside service at the Newton Cemetery. A separate celebration of life service will be announced at a future date.
