Sara G. Henken (Achter), 89, died peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving children on Friday, March 22, 2024. She was the wife of the late Milton L. Henken (2018). with whom she celebrated 61 loving years of marriage.
Born in Magdiel, Israel, she was the daughter of the late Jennie (Rabinowitz) and Sam Achter. Sara came to the US as a child. She grew up in Brooklyn and Buffalo, NY, and later moved to the Boston area. She and her husband loved the Cape. In 1983, they bought a home in South Dennis, where they retired in 1995.
Sara was active in the Dennis-Yarmouth Newcomer Club and Am Hayam on Cape Cod. She was a teacher, a locally published poet, a lifelong swimmer, and loved reading and dogs. Family was most important to her. Sara is survived and will be deeply missed by her three children, her son Peter Henken and his wife Rosa; her daughters Amy and Sue Henken; two grandchildren, Jessica and Zachary; a brother, Gene Achter and his wife Kathy; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visitation with family and friends will take place on Tuesday, March 26th from 11am-12 Noon at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 729 Rt. 134, South Dennis. Funeral Services will take place at 12 noon, followed by burial at Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Dennis. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sara’s name to Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod.
