Joyce Mueller Lange Manning of West Harwich, MA passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at the Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis surrounded by her family. She was born in Elizabeth, NJ to the late William Henry and Lillian (Mueller) Manning. She was a graduate of Battin High School in Elizabeth, NJ and attended Concordia College in Bronxville, NY where she received a Junior College Certificate and the Alfred H. and Adele Mattfield memorial prize for excellent scholarship in Humanities. Joyce also attended the University of Illinois and graduated with a bachelor of science and master of arts degree.
Joyce married the late William Joseph Manning, Sr. on August 15, 1947 in Champaign, IL. She taught school in Foosland, IL before returning to East Hartford, CT to assist her husband with various businesses. Joyce and her husband Bill moved to Cape Cod in 1957 where they founded the Colonial Village Motel and Cottages in Dennisport, which has operated since. Joyce brought a high level of enthusiasm and perfectionism that contributed hugely to the business' success. She was also active in many beautification projects for the Village of Dennisport.
Joyce and Bill were founding members of the Faith Lutheran Church in East Hartford, CT and were long time members of the First Lutheran Church in West Barnstable. Even greater than her enthusiasm for her business was Joyce's love of her family. Her Easter Egg hunts and Fourth of July clambakes attended by her children and 12 grandchildren were legendary.
Joyce loved spending winters in Highland Beach, FL. Joyce and Bill were long time members of the Eastward Ho! Country Club in Chatham and hosted many family holidays and celebrations there. She was an active reader enjoying biographies and histories. Joyce enjoyed playing Chinese Checkers and beat her daughter three times the week before her passing.
Joyce is predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years, William J. Manning, Sr. (2002). She is survived by her son William J. Manning, Jr., M.D., his wife Heiti of Osterville, MA; their children, William J. Manning, III and wife Maura of Marion, MA, Sarah and husband Noah Stuart of Cohasset, MA, Katherine and husband J. Robert Eastwick-Haskell of North Andover, MA, Siobhan and husband Jeffrey Harder of Old Saybrook, CT; her son Richard L. Manning, his wife Deborah A. of Dennis, MA; their children Richard L. Manning, Jr. and wife Catherine A. of East Walpole, MA, Keith L. Manning and wife Clare E. of Suwanee, GA, Barbara A. and husband Stephen L. Sollner of Sharon, MA; her son Christopher J. Manning, his wife Martha of East Dennis, MA; their children Dolly Manning of East Dennis Ma., Christopher J. Manning, Jr. and wife Lilias of Davidsonville, M.D., Michael Manning and his wife Michelle of West Bloomfield, MI; her daughter Carolyn Manning McIntyre, her husband Floyd L. McIntyre, M.D. of West Harwich, MA; their children Joyce McIntyre, M.D. and husband Frank Santosuosso of Shrewsbury, MA, Floyd McIntyre, Jr. and wife Valerie of Centerville, MA. Joyce is also survived by 16 adored great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place Sunday, June 25, 2017 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 729 Route 134, S. Dennis, MA 02660. Family and friends will gather 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Monday, June 26th at the funeral home. Funeral Services will be celebrated 10 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 1663 Main St., W. Barnstable, MA 02668. Burial will immediately follow in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Harwich Port, MA.
