James E. Canning, 82, of West Dennis, MA passed away peacefully at home with family and loved ones by his side on Sunday, October 1, 2017. He was born and raised in Framingham, MA to late Charles and Mary (McManus) Canning. Jim attended Framingham High School; and while working full-time, he received his civil engineering degree from Boston University.
Jim was a proud US Navy Korean War veteran and member of the Seabees. He worked over 50 years in the construction industry in the greater Boston area.
Jim and his wife Laurie enjoyed many summers on the Cape. They lived in Malden, MA before settling full-time in W. Dennis 3 years ago.
Jim is predeceased by his first wife Helena (Davis) Canning, son John Canning, sister Rosemary Canning and nephew Christopher Curley. He is survived by his loving wife Laurie (Carroll) Canning; sons James (and Brenda) Canning, Jr. of Bellingham, MA and Jeffrey Canning of Holliston, MA; 3 grandchildren Marea, Jayson and Caroline Canning; sisters Alice Canning of Framingham, MA and Joan Curley of Plainfield, CT; niece, Dr. Susan Curley and nephew Sawyer Carroll; mother-in-law Honoria Carroll of S. Yarmouth, MA; brother-in-laws Michael Carroll of Woburn, MA and Mark Carroll of SJC, CA.
Visiting hours are Sunday, October 8, 2017 from 2-5 pm at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 729 Route 134, S. Dennis, MA 02660. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 am Monday, October 9th at St. Pius X Church, 5 Barbara St, S. Yarmouth, MA 02664 followed by US Navy military honors.
