Flora Isabel (Lane) Livingston, age 90, peacefully passed away on December 28, 2022, in her hometown of Dennisport, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. She was surrounded by the love of her family and dear family friends. She was the loving wife of Curt A. Livingston and mother of three sons; Curt, Jr., David, and Peter. She was the matriarch and bastion of hope for her family. Their guardian Angel will be greatly missed.
She was born in Whitinsville, Massachusetts on February 19, 1932. Some of her fondest memories were of her life on a family farm, with her father David, her mother Isabel, and her dear sister Carolyn. She reminisced stories of her beloved horse, Bucky. She enjoyed riding on the salt flats and Sea Street Beach and Carolyn often accompanied her riding Teddy. She shared jovial stories of their pet ram that was notorious for butting unaware guests.
Flora was a solid academician and graduated as Salutatorian from Dennis-Yarmouth High School in 1949. She entertained thoughts of Law School but chose Nursing, and 20 years into her nursing career became one of the first Physician Assistants in the Nation. She was imbued with deep commitment and attention to detail in all she did. She enrolled in the New England Deaconess Hospital nursing program and graduated in 1953 with the Outstanding Student Award, rating her first in her class. There she met the love of her life, Curt A. Livingston, and married on September 4, 1954. As a family, she and Curt moved to Dennisport Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in 1957. Summers with her family were spent going to West Dennis Beach and returning home via the Gingerbread House for ice cream. She continued enjoying swims in the Nantucket Sound and Scargo Lake with her beloved sister, Carolyn well into her 80s.
Professionally, Flora worked as a Registered Nurse and instructor in the Coronary Care Unit at Cape Cod Hospital before working privately for the Internists of Hyannis, Massachusetts. In 1973, she was encouraged to become a Physician’s Assistant - a new concept then. Her family and friends were quite proud of her accomplishments while raising a family. In 1986, she became the Director of Employee Health at Cape Cod Hospital. She loved her career and did not retire until 2015, at the age of 83.
Flora enjoyed the serenity of their family cabin in Maine, built by her beloved husband and sons. Flora and Curt truly lived life by the "Golden Rule". Many happy memories will remain of fall and winters in Maine, enjoying the autumn colors while canoeing on the Saco River, cross-country skiing, motoring through the mountainous Kancamagus Highway, and watching her family continue to grow.
Flora was the younger of two children and was predeceased by her father, David Lane, mother, Isabel Lane, and sister, Carolyn (Lane) Wolff. She is survived by her three sons, Curt A. Livingston, David B. Livingston, Peter G. Livingston, and his wife, Lisa. Her grandchildren; Michelle, Arianne and her husband, Nelson, Amos and his wife, Samantha, Ryan and his wife, Carlay, Alyx, Channing, and Traxson. Great-grandchildren; Cillian, Caedon, and Gabriel.
Memorial services, in honor of Flora, will be on Saturday, February 25, 2023, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 729 MA-134, South Dennis, Massachusetts 02660.
