Refaat S. Fanous, MD, 86 of Dartmouth, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2023 in his residence with his loving family at his bedside. He was the husband of Joan Mary (Griffiths) Fanous with whom he shared 51 years of marriage.
Born in Minya, Egypt, a son of the late Sharkawi Fanous and Aziza (Hanna) Bishara. Dr. Fanous received his Doctor of Medicine from the Cairo University School of Medicine. He was an Obstetrician-Gynecologist for 45 years, retiring in 2004 in Dartmouth. He was a communicant of St. George Greek Orthodox Church.
Dr. Fanous met the love of his life, Joan Mary while in Great Britain and eventually they moved their family to the United States in 1976.
He loved his family very much and enjoyed cooking for them. He always enjoyed trying to invent something to make life easier including a medical patent that he was very proud of.
In addition to his loving wife, Joan Mary, he is survived by his children, Matthew Fanous and his wife Amanda of Dennis, Clare Caldwell and her husband Mosadi of New Bedford and Alexander Fanous and his wife Sarah of Arlington; his siblings, Nabil Fanous and his wife Dina of VA, Farouk Fanous and his wife Carol of CA and Bahat of Canada, Raoufa and Soad and her husband Anis in Egypt; his grandchildren, Ivy, Gregory and Quinn Fanous; two step-grandchildren, Milan and Mason, and many nieces and nephews.
His visitation will be Tuesday, January 31, 2023 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 186 Cross Road, Dartmouth followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. in the Church. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. For online tribute: www.waring-sullivan.com.
