Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Joseph D. and Maria (Mendonca) Saraiva, he was a life-long resident of the area.
Mr. Saraiva was a proud veteran of the US Marine Corp, serving in Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Guam during WWII. He was the owner of Playdium Bowling Lanes and Couger Lanes for 32 years. He was also a Technician for the Massachusetts State Lottery for many years before retiring.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge #73, Moose Lodge #914 and the American Legion Post #1. He was also a member of the Portuguese War Veterans and the Massachusetts Retirement Association.
Joe was an avid golfer and member of the New Bedford Municipal Golf Club. He enjoyed bowling and was a Red Sox and Patriots fan. He loved spending time with family.
Survivors include: a son, Robert Messier and his wife Faith of Dartmouth; a brother, Cristiano of New Bedford; a sister, Mary Souza of New Bedford; five grandchildren, David, Gwen, Brian, Catherine and April; four great grandchildren and three nieces, Donna, Debra and Darlene.
A private burial will take place at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA. Arrangements are in the care of Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Dartmouth.
