Barbara (Silver) Plant, 97, of South Dartmouth, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 18, 2023 at Brookdale Sakonnet Bay in Tiverton, RI. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles Plant, Jr., with whom she shared 53 years of marriage.
Born in Fairhaven, she was the daughter of the late Percy E. and Marion R. (Humphrey) Silver. Barbara was a graduate of Fairhaven High School, class of 1943, and worked as an office secretary prior to her marriage. As a homemaker, she and “Charlie” proudly raised their three children in New Bedford before moving to Dartmouth in 1971.
A lover of animals, nature and country living, she began a passionate interest in the breeding, training and showing of Norwegian Elkhounds. Many of her Ble Tru Kennel dogs became champions throughout the country. In 2019, the Dartmouth Wanderers in a Celebration of Elders, recognized and honored her for her therapy work with her dogs in local nursing homes. She was a proud member of the Wampanoag Kennel Club and a founding member of the Norwegian Elkhound Rescue & Referral group where she found many “forever homes” for her beloved breed of dogs. In later years, she also bred and raised Boston Terriers and was known to take in and love a stray cat or two.
As one of the few remaining of the “greatest generation”, Barbara loved telling stories of her life as a child growing up on Sconticut Neck and learning that she was a descendent of John Cooke and ten other Mayflower passengers. Besides her interest in dogs, she had a wealth of knowledge for varied interests in gardening, back yard wildlife, and the great out doors in general. She was fascinated with storms and would often call her children and grandchildren when one was approaching. Barbara touched many hearts and lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her three loving children, Donald C. Plant and his wife, Katherine J. of Dartmouth; Alan Plant and his wife Pamela of New Bedford and their children, Eric A. Plant and Kara McEachern; Sandra L. O’Donnell and her husband Niall of Onset and their children, Lindsay Robertson, Holly O’Donnell, Kayleigh Hall and Rory O’Donnell; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Nancy A. Bendiksen of Fairhaven, and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Shirley M. Richard and Robert H. Silver.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to your favorite charity.
A celebration of life for Barbara will be held at 11:00 AM, on February 10th, at the First Congregational Church in Fairhaven. Relatives and friends are welcome.
Internment will be at the National Cemetery in Bourne in a private ceremony.
