Anthony (Tony) L. Sylvia, 92, of Dartmouth, MA passed away Friday, December 20, 2024, at St Luke’s Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Evelyn C. Sylvia. They had been married 71 years.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Anthony and Mary (Arruda) Sylvia. He lived in Dartmouth and was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church of Dartmouth, MA.
Mr. Sylvia was a graduate of New Bedford High School, class of 1950, where he met the love of his life, Evelyn. Upon graduation, he went to work for the Baker Printing Company of New Bedford and eventually became the owner and president. He spent the balance of his working years with the company, retiring in 2004.
He served on the Board of Directors of First Federal Savings Bank (later Webster Bank). He was also a past board member of the Country Club of New Bedford and Bristol Community Foundation. He was currently a board member of the Robert F. Stoico First-Fed Charitable Foundation.
He was an avid golfer and proudly a member of the Country Club of New Bedford for over 50 years, since 1973. One of his happiest golfing memories was winning the Satellite division of the CCNB Four-ball tournament with his grandson, Matthew. He was also a past member of Monarch Country Club of Palm City, Florida.
Survivors include his children, Scott Sylvia of Fairhaven, MA, Jocelyn Garlington of Marshfield, MA, Jill Pelletier and her husband Raymond of Dartmouth, MA, a sister Sandra McKenna and her husband James of Dartmouth. He had nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. James Sylvia and his wife Leigh and their son Oliver and their daughter Violet, Corey Sylvia and his wife Nora and their daughter Hadley, Chelsea Vieira and her husband Tyler and their daughter Scarlett and their son Cameron, Thomas (TJ) Garlington, Benjamin Garlington and his wife Kirsten and their son Jackson, Tracey Fischer and her husband Mark and their son Hayden and daughter Chloe, Jeffrey Pelletier and his sons Raymond and Matteo, Matthew Pelletier and his wife Alexi and daughters Rosie and Vivien, and Michael Pelletier. He was predeceased by a sister, Ethel Fraga of Hartford, CT, and a brother, Donald Sylvia of Dartmouth, MA. and a beloved daughter-in-law, Linda Sylvia of Fairhaven, MA.
In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated, and services will be private. Arrangements have been placed in the hands of Dartmouth Funeral Home, 230 Russells Mills Road, South Dartmouth.
