Martha was born in Fall River, on April 2, 1920, the 3rd of 11 children to the late Edward and Delia (Autote) Durand.
She was a 1937 graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River and enjoyed attending all her class reunions. In 1942, she married Thomas E. McVey. They spent 52 years of marriage together until Tom passed in 1994.
Martha worked as a bookkeeper at Engine Service in Fall River for 16 years before her retirement and prior to that she had worked as a Machine Operator for the HarLee Manufacturing Co. in Fall River. She later volunteered at Charlton Memorial Hospital in the Pharmacy Department.
She was member of L’Association Franco and a longtime member of Sacred Heart Church in Fall River and , where she was an active member of the Women’s Guild, Senior Club and Bowling League. Martha was the recipient of the prestigious Marian Medal at St. Mary’s cathedral, presented by Bishop Cronin. She loved spending time with family and friends, especially joining them for bus trips to the casino with longtime friend Rosanne Patota.
Martha is survived by 3 sisters, Gertrude Moreau of Yuba City, CA, Claire Carpenter of Lawrenceville, GA, and Sr. Lorraine Durand, SSJ of Holyoke, MA. She is also survived by her 2 children Susan (McVey) Beaulieu and her husband Kenneth Beaulieu of Somerset and Timothy J. McVey of Fall River. Her two granddaughters Karen (Beaulieu) Theriault and her husband Jason Theriault of Westport and Renee (Beaulieu) Medley and her husband Matthew Medley of Fall River. Martha also had the pleasure of being a great grandmother to 3, Jordan Theriault, Cali Medley and Weiland Medley. Martha was the sister of the late Yvonne Moore, Lucille McGrady, Irene Kenworthy, Alexander, Paul, Charles and Louis Durand.
Martha was known as “Mem”, not just by her own grandchildren, but by many who met her through the years. She may have been small in stature, but her heart and personality were larger than life. Her smile and good nature was infectious. She will be missed by many. We were truly blessed to have known Martha.
Calling hours will be held, Wednesday, August 16, 2017 from 4 to 7pm in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Rose E. Sullivan 866 County St., Somerset. A Funeral Mass will be held for family and friends on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at 11am at St. Thomas More Church, 386 Luther Ave., Somerset, followed by burial in Assonet Burial Ground.
