John Sgroi, 95, of Lakeland, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Syracuse to the late Santo and Mary (Rao) Sgroi. John proudly served his country as an Army Staff Sergeant during WWII. He was a union negotiator for U.S. Steel International, retiring in 1981. He was also a laborer at Crucible Steel, and served as past President of both the Local Steelworker’s Union 1277 and Syracuse Labor Council. John was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and SU football and basketball. He was predeceased by his daughter, Joann Genovese-Sgroi; a great-granddaughter, Angelina Hope LoBiondo; a brother Charles Sgroi and two sisters, Lena and Vincenza Sgroi.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, the former Constance Nudo; his son Joseph (Karen) Sgroi, of Syracuse , his daughter; Constance (Patrick) Goonan, of Rochester, grandchildren; Erin (Elijah) Goonan-Wade, Sean (Julie) Goonan, Nicholas (Katelyn) Sgroi, Katherine (Andrew) Genovese-Thoresen, Adam (Meghan) Sgroi, Johanna (Michael) Genovese-LoBiondo, Francesca Genovese and Brittany Sgroi; 7 great-grandchildren, Jackson, Carson, Charles, Santino, Gianni, Lucy and Giada; brother-in-law Louis (Shirley) Nudo and nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at BAGOZZI TWINS FUNERAL HOME, and 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Church, where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated. Burial with military honors will follow in Belle Isle Cemetery, Warners. Family and friends may call on Veteran’s Day (Tuesday, November 11, 2014) from 4 to 7 p.m. at BAGOZZI TWINS FUNERAL HOME, 2601 Milton Avenue.
