Jean Hardy, age 71, passed away on Friday, December 9, 2022 at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, WA after a short battle with cancer with her husband and daughters at her side.
Jean was born to James and Dorothy Rothnie on August 6, 1951 in Seattle, WA. the oldest of six children. Jean grew up in Edmonds, WA and graduated from Meadowdale High School in 1969, and earned her BA in Education from Washington State University in 1973, becoming a Home Economics teacher at Marysville Pilchuck High School.
Jean met her future husband, Jeff Hardy, at WSU, married on July 27, 1974 and moved to North Everett where she lived for 45 years. After two beautiful daughters, Rebecca and Elizabeth, were born Jean left teaching to become a full time mom. She embraced motherhood and made raising her girls a top priority.
Jean’s lasting legacy will be twofold. She had a selfless and willing desire to serve. She was a PTA mom, Campfire Girls leader, Sunday School teacher, Bible Study Fellowship instructor and all-the-while a volunteer for the Providence Hospital Children’s Foundation Twig Shop for 38 years. Jean never missed an opportunity to contribute in ways that would benefit her children, church, and community. She was also a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She enriched her children and grandchildren’s lives with carefully planned cooking and craft projects. Her grandchildren became accustomed to her regular pronouncements “We’re going on an adventure today!” The adventures were a surprise often involving exploring the great outdoors, parks, and cities. Families and friends were touched by her generosity and thoughtfulness. Whether experiencing a loss, illness or celebratory event, Jean was always present for them offering compassion and support.
Jean loved cooking and was well known for her delicious scones, Christmas cinnamon rolls, birthday and wedding cakes made from scratch, and oatmeal cookies which she hand delivered to family, neighbors, and friends on Valentine’s Day. She always cooked generous amounts of her holiday and potluck contributions, ensuring that everyone had an opportunity to take some leftovers home. She often researched new recipes and was committed to making delicious and healthy options for all to enjoy.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents Jim and Dorothy and her brother Tom. She leaves behind her husband of 48 years, Jeff Hardy, daughter Rebecca (Chris) Sheldon and granddaughter Peyton and daughter Elizabeth Miller and grandchildren Savannah, Jackson, and Kennedy. She is also survived by sisters Nancy Killgore, Susan (Skip) Wilson, Barb (Martin) Singer, and Bev (Steve) Geiger as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on January 7, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Snohomish United Methodist Church on 2400 Lake Avenue in Snohomish, WA. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to Providence Hospital Children’s Association. Send to PGCA, PO Box 13228, Everett, WA 98206.
