Wilma Davis was born Wilma Ted Cooper on December 22, 1933 in Marble Valley, Alabama. Her parents were Teddy Sanders Cooper and Tracy Eastwood Cooper. She had two brothers Aubrey Cooper and Joseph Cooper. She was the last surviving member of the family. The Cooper family had resided in Alabama since the 1810’s.
Wilma grew up in Goodwater, Alabama, a town of about 1,000 people located about 50 miles southeast of Birmingham. She attended Goodwater High School, where she was class president her senior year. After graduating, Wilma moved to Birmingham and lived in a boarding house run by the Forrester family. She worked for a State Farm Insurance office for approximately 10 years, and during that time she assisted with opening branch offices around the country. She also volunteered at a children’s hospital. While in Birmingham, she attended Westend Baptist Church, where she met and married Joel Davis.
Joel and Wilma were married in 1963. They had two sons, Kenneth Davis in 1965 and Keith Davis in 1968. The family moved to Memphis, TN in 1975, where Wilma worked for several years as Financial Secretary at Balmoral Baptist Church. In 1983 the family moved to the Atlanta area, where Wilma worked for a time in the HR Department of the same construction company where her husband worked as an office manager. They attended Annistown Road Baptist Church, where Joel served in many roles, including Music Minister and later as a Pastor to Seniors.
Wilma Davis loved her family deeply and always put their interests ahead of her own. She was a quiet and reserved person, but she was also strong-willed and would not do anything that was not her decision. Growing up during the Great Depression taught her to be frugal with money and she rarely spent any on herself. She loved reading inspirational novels, crossword puzzles, fried chicken and catfish, and visiting with her family in Alabama.
Wilma Davis is survived by her son Kenneth Ted Davis, daughter-in-law Tina Kinkead Davis, son Brian Keith Davis, grandson Andrew Davis, granddaughter Rebecca Davis, and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Wilma will be held Friday, August 26, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Eternal Hills Funeral Home, 3594 Stone Mountain Highway, Snellville, GA 30039, followed by a funeral service in the Eternal Hills Funeral Home Chapel at 3:00 pm.
