Joseph Francis O’Brien Jr., 65, passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Amicasa Hospice in Decatur, GA. Born in Pittsfield, MA, he was the beloved son of the late Blanche Evelyn and Joseph Francis O’Brien Sr.
Joseph graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1977 and went on to earn multiple degrees. He received an Associate Degree in Engineering Technology – Electronics from Berkshire Community College in MA. After moving to Indiana, he earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1983. Joseph started his career as a test engineer for Magnabox while pursuing his academic journey, he graduated with an associates in mechanical engineering from Purdue University in 1993.
In 1994, Joseph relocated to Georgia to work for Scientific Atlanta, where he built a notable career as a testing engineer, later transitioning to Cisco. He dedicated 17 years of service to the company. In Georgia, he met and married the love of his life, Rose Marie, and became a father to Cassandra Nicole O’Brien in 1995. He resided in Georgia for the remainder of his life.
In addition to his professional achievements, Joseph was an accomplished trumpet player who often performed in Church services, sharing his musical talent with the community. He also had a great love for hot spicy sauces and foods, which made it easy to send him Christmas gifts that he always appreciated. You could always count on Joe to send you his homemade fudge and yearly calendar to start the new year…always looking forward to his family visits.
Joseph is survived by his daughter, Cassandra Nicole O’Brien of Fort Wayne, IN; and his brothers: Neil O’Brien of Memphis, TN; Ron O’Brien (Hope) of Martha’s Vineyard, MA; Russ O’Brien (Pat) of Merrimack, NH; and Kevin O’Brien of Lanesborough, MA; as well as three nephew’s and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his mother, Blanche O’Brien, his father, Joseph O’Brien Sr., and his wife, Rose O’Brien.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on July 29, 2024, at Eternal Hills, 3594 Stone Mountain Hwy, Snellville, GA 30039. Visitation will take place from 11 AM to 2 PM at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Research in honor of Joseph’s legacy.
