Evelyn Hahlen Bennett, age 99, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Park Springs in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Ms. Bennett was born in Beloit, Ohio on March 23, 1916. She was raised in Ohio and had been a resident of Virginia for many years. Evelyn was a Registered Nurse and served proudly in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. in Europe during World War II. She was the heart and soul of the family. She will be remembered for her insurmountable wisdom, humor, selflessness, strength, and fierce independence. Her greatest desire was that, as a family, we take care of each other and that will be her legacy. She is survived by children: Barbara Bennett, Tracey Bankhead and husband, John, and Robert ‘Chip’ B. Bennett, Jr. and wife, Terri; grandchildren: Will Finocchio, Ann Mefferd and husband, Andrew, Jake Bankhead and wife, Audrey, Ben Bankhead, John Bankhead, Barbara Richardson and husband, Chris, Robert B. Bennett, III and Emma Bennett; and great-grandchildren: Hudson, Bennett and Dylan Finocchio, Jasper and Cleome Mefferd, Greta Bankhead, and Henry ‘Hank’ Richardson; niece: Susan Vandenberg and husband, Herman; grand-niece: Nicole Vandenberg. Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Robert Bernard Bennett, Sr.; by her parents Gottlieb ‘Gid’ and Louise Hahlen; sisters: Doris McCullough, Lucille Gorie, infant Florence Hahlen, and brother, Ernest Hahlen. A celebration of Evelyn’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Eternal Hills Funeral Home, 3594 Stone Mountain Highway, Snellville, GA with The Rev. Dr. James Bankhead officiating. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
