Eleanor Szendel, 91, passed away in the early-morning hours of December 5, 2024, the result of a stroke days prior. Known to her family as Grandma, Eleanor spent the previous afternoon surrounded by her kids and grandkids, who rotated holding her hand and speaking softly to her.
Eleanor was born on July 3, 1933, in Buffalo, New York, to Stanley and Clara (Brixy) Rollek. She had one sister, Jeanette Pawlak (Benny). She was married to Norman Szendel, her husband of 58 years, who preceded her in death in 2012. Eleanor and Norman relocated to Snellville, Georgia, in 1975, and made their home in the suburbs north of Atlanta. Eleanor was mother to Tim Szendel (Denise), Elaine Byers (Mike) and James Szendel (Joelle), grandmother to Erin Rapp (Bryan), Kyle Szendel, Bryan Szendel (Leslie), Haley Heacock (Ford), Blake Byers, Colin Byers, Elyse Byers, Ryan Szendel and Jordan Szendel, Davian McEwan (Samantha), Tyler Eidson (Taylor) and great-grandmother to Fordy Heacock, Westin McEwan, Oaklyn Eidson, and Apollo Eidson.
Eleanor was raised in Buffalo, New York, amidst her extended Polish-American family, and was quick to lend a hand to anyone in hardship. She gave devoted end-of-life care to her father, her mother, and her sister, and then many years later, to her husband, Norman. Eleanor was committed to her Catholic faith and church, and spent hours hand-crafting hundreds of rosaries to give away to church members and friends. Eleanor will be missed by her family, her church, and her friends.
Eleanor's memorial Service will be held Friday December 27th -Noon-at Prince Of Peace Catholic Church, 6439 Spout Springs Road, Flowery Branch, GA. She will be buried in Eternal Hills Memorial Gardens alongside of her husband Norman.
