Martha Witham Smart1948 - 2016SHAPLEIGH - Martha Witham Smart, 67, of Shapleigh, Maine, and Bonita Springs, Fla., passed away on Feb. 3, 2016, at her winter home in Bonita Springs. She was born on Oct. 12, 1948, in Skowhegan, the youngest daughter of Dwight and Ada (Senior) Witham. Martha floated around the schools of Skowhegan like a social butterfly, where she used her megaphone to amplify her bubbly spirit by cheerleading for the hometown football team. She was also salutatorian of her high school graduating class of 1966. On Aug. 17, 1968, she married Nelson J. Smart Jr., her junior high school sweetheart, best friend, and soulmate. She attended and graduated from Forsyth Dental School in Boston, becoming a dental hygienist. She returned to her hometown to work in Dr. Gould's dental office. She later left the profession to join her husband as owners and operators of Smart's Funeral Homes in Skowhegan and Madison. A lifetime supporter of the Federated Church in Skowhegan, she took great pleasure in ringing handbells with her church peers (The Ding-a-Lings!). During her retirement, she enjoyed golf and spending time with her cherished friends and family. Martha deeply loved being a grandmother and took great pleasure in providing computers, cuddles, and cookies to her grandchildren, grandnieces, grandnephews, and grand dogs at her home at Square Pond. Martha was the life of the party, lifted heavy hearts, comforted weary souls, and drove us crazy with her stubbornness, a trait inherited by her sons despite all their best efforts to the contrary. Her family's hearts are heavy for her absence but they are grateful for an end to her suffering. Martha was predeceased by her parents; her nephew Stephen L. Boardman; and her husband. She is survived by her two sons, Aaron Smart and his wife Jill of Pembroke, N.H., and Ryan Smart and his wife LoriAnn of Lowell, Mass.; one grandson Tyler Smart, and one granddaughter Abigail Smart, both of Pembroke, N.H.; her sister-in-law Constance Annette Boardman of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., her sister and brother-in-law Sara and Tom Costello of Shapleigh and Mulberry Fla.; three nephews, Mark Boardman and his wife Linda, Scott Boardman, and Anthony Costello and his wife Mary Jo, one niece Alison (Costello) Cooney and her husband Michael; several beloved grandnieces and grandnephews; and two spoiled granddogs.A celebration of Martha's life will be held at the Federated Church, 13 Island Ave., Skowhegan, at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2016.In lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions to:Square Pond Improvement AssociationP.O.
