John “Jack” McCarty, 82, passed away at home holding his beloved wife’s hand on Saturday, October 22, 2016 as the fall harvest came to a close. He was born in the middle of the spring planting season at the family farm in Solon on May 24, 1934 the son of Ralph and Elvie (Spencer) McCarty. Jack graduated from Solon High School, class of 1951. Having been raised on the family farm he continued farming with his father for the next several years. He also filled his time as Solon’s road commissioner and constable and as a bouncer at the Solon Hotel. He worked for a time for Pizzagalley Construction and Cianbro where he was involved in building S.D. Warren/Sappi and the Madison Sanitary District.
Jack was a kind, gentle husband and father who used his woodworking craft to create custom works for his family and friends. They are all grateful for the beautiful Adirondack chairs, chests, and countless other creations in their homes. He was so talented that he was able to talk his son through a building project without actually being there. Jack connected with his sons and grandsons during their annual trips to hunting camp where they shared lots of laughs, countless games of cribbage, a nap or two, and of course some hunting. Jack taught so many people to play cribbage and he rarely lost. He was such a great player that he could teach kids to play before they knew how to add.
Jack is survived by his wife of 41 years, Natalie (Justin) McCarty, sons, Donald McCarty and Kelly Maloney, Robert “Bob” McCarty and Carol Dunton, Ralph “David” McCarty, Charles McCarty and wife Sylvia, Paul McCarty and wife Valerie, Mary McCarty and Pierre “Skip” Quirion, Kathy Williams and husband John, Laurie Verardo and Jeffrey Cormier; grandchildren, Phillip, Rebecca, Derek, Braden, Andre, Andrea, James, Chris, John “Max”, Lucas and Jacob; daughter-in-law, Ramona Quirion; sister, Patricia Coro; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; son, Owen “Scott” Quirion; 6 sisters; and 1 brother.
Jack’s family extends their deepest appreciation to Dr. Paradis and Carey as well as the nurses and staff at Redington-Fairview General Hospital for the excellent care they provided Jack.
