Born in Harmony in 1934 to Carl and Lena (Buzzell) Taylor, Herman attended Harmony schools, leaving in 10th grade to begin a long career as a hand-sewer for several area companies before retiring at age 61. He and Shirley have been inseparable since 1952, marrying in 1955, going on to have three children in the home that Herman built with his own hands. Herman’s “hobby” was working and always tinkering on some such thing or other. He and Shirley were able to enjoy 8 winters traveling with their RV to South Carolina before settling back in Skowhegan for their golden years. Some of his greatest joys in retirement was watching his youngest grandchildren playing Ice Hockey and snuggling with his “honorary grandchild” Dimitri.
Herman is survived by his wife Shirley, son Kevin Taylor and Pam of Waterville; daughter Melody Avery and Leslie of Waterville, Daughter-in-law Katie Taylor and Brandon of Augusta, Grandchildren Amy, Whitney, Joslyn, Joel, Ryan, Emily, Jake, and Anna, great-grandson Cody, Brother-in-law Arthur Lagross and Jeannie of Skowhegan and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings Edith, Eloise, Auren and Elwin and son, Kent Taylor.
A grave-side service will be held in the spring at the family plot in Athens. The family would like to thank Mainegeneral Hospice, especially Frannie and Michelle for their kind service over the past 15 months. Donations can be made in Herman’s memory to Mainegeneral Hospice at P.O. Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903 or at give.mainegeneral.org/hospice
