CORNVILLE – Elizabeth (Erb) Hogate, 83, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on December 15, 2017. She was born in Salem, NJ on June 8, 1934 the daughter of Philip and Elizabeth Erb. After growing up in Alloway, NJ, Libby and her husband Melvin Hogate lived in Lower Alloways Creek. In 1967, they moved north to Cornville where they settled to raise their family.
For 40 years, Libby worked various secretarial positions at Redington Fairview General Hospital. She also served the town of Cornville as the town clerk and tax assessor. She acquired her international town clerk certification. As a member of the Maine Municipal Association she taught courses to Maine tax collectors and treasures as well as town clerks. Libby was a charter member of the Cornville Fire Department and a member of the Cornville Historical Society. She was also a member of the Church of the Open Bible in Athens.
Libby is survived by her 4 children, Melvin Hogate Jr. and his wife Jeanne of Cornville, Kenneth Hogate and his wife Brenda of Cornville, Elizabeth Jean Winkley of Virginia, and Jonathan Hogate and his wife Debra of Skowhegan; 12 grandchildren, Jessica Ward and her husband Todd, Isaac Hogate and his wife Erika, Sara Derosby and her husband Charles, Heather Hogate and fiancé Jason, Eric Hogate and his friend Jessica, Dan Mosher, Gregory Hogate and his wife Nicole, Philip Hogate, Christopher Winkley and his wife Jessica, Jennifer Harris, Amanda Hogate and Conor Hogate; 11 great-grandchildren, Deyonce Ward, Quinton Ward, Elsa Hogate, Sigrid Hogate, Callie Hogate, William Dutton, Cody Dutton, Neil Harris Jr., Katie Harris, Talon Mosher and his companion Tabatha, and Ryan Mosher; daughter-in-law, Louise Howell and her husband Charles from Ohio; sister, Doris Moore; and several nieces and nephews.
Libby was predeceased by her parents; husband Melvin Hogate Sr.; son, Lewis Hogate; infant son, Jamie Hogate; siblings, Lewis Erb, Philip Erb, Ella Smith, and Elmer Hogate.
Family and friends may visit from 4-8pm, Tuesday, December 19 at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Avenue, Skowhegan. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 1pm, Wednesday, December 20 with a time of visitation immediately preceding services from 12-1pm. Interment will be in the spring at Collins Cemetery, Cornville.
