Edmond “Bonhomme” L. Sirois, 81, of Veazie, passed away August 20, 2014 after a six month battle due to complications from cancer surgery. He was surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren. He was born August 9, 1933 in Skowhegan, Maine, the son of Wilfred Sirois and Bernadette Lessard.
Edmond graduated from Skowhegan High School in the class of 1951. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1952 and was honorably discharged in 1956. In that year he enlisted into the United States Air Force, and was stationed at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Maine where all three of his children were born. During his military career he was stationed in Tripoli, Libya, on Wheelus Air Force Base, Otis Air Force Base in Cape Cod, MA, on CCK Base in Taiwan, and on Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, CA. In 1974 he retired from the Air Force after 22 years in the military and returned to Maine.
Upon his return he entered in to the physician’s assistant program at Dartmouth College in 1974. He completed his studies in 1975, becoming among the first licensed physician’s assistants in the country. From that point forward Edmond worked for Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor in their residency program. He taught young doctors from the early 1980’s until his retirement in 1995.
Spending time with his grandchildren was a priority for him. He made a special effort to attend every event of theirs.
Edmond was a sports enthusiast. He especially loved the Red Sox and was an avid fan of the University of Maine Black Bears. When he was in high school he was a star pitcher and tried out for the Boston Braves (his knuckle ball was his specialty). He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn of 61 years of Veazie, his three children; Janeen Summers and her partner Peter Henderson of Richmond, Michael Sirois and his wife Susanne of Portsmouth, NH, Theresa Bridges and her husband Dexter of Belgrade Lakes, his seven grandchildren; Haley Goodine and her husband Shawn of Dedham, Tana Sirois of New York City, Ashley Decker and her husband Stephen of New Sharon, Shyla Williams and her husband Johnston of Spring Creek, PA, Joshua Edmond Bridges, Cherish Bridges, Caleb Bridges all of Belgrade Lakes, one great grandson, Jacob Michael Decker of New Sharon, one brother Jerome Sirois of Norridgewock, sister and brother in-laws, Carol Belanger and her husband Roland of Skowhegan, Fe Jones of Mercer, Philip Jones and his wife Glenice of Madison and Dale Jones and his wife Patty of Norridgewock, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, three brothers; Danny, Armand, and Abel Sirois, one sister; Dolores Tarascio.
Words cannot express the emptiness we feel not having him with us. We will cling to the memories until we meet again.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday August 25, 2014 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday August 26, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church, Water St., Skowhegan, Maine, with his burial to follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Skowhegan, Maine. A luncheon will be held at the Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish Hall following all services.
