He was born in Skowhegan, Maine on January 23, 1930 the youngest child of Leon and Mae (Secor) Smiley.
He graduated from Skowhegan High School before joining the United States Air Force. He served in Korea during in the Korean Conflict, where he worked at an airplane mechanic. Dave graduated from the University of Maine at Orono on May 1, 1954, with a B.A. in Chemical Engineering. He worked in various technical, sales, and managerial positions in the paper industry, retiring from Champion Paper Company, in Canton, NC in 1992.
He married Jacqueline M. (Bess) on June 13, 1953 and she predeceased him on June 30, 2014.
Dave loved to travel, byt his real passion was to spend time with his family and friends at the camp on Embden Pone. He was known for storytelling, his love of people, and his appreciation for a martini or two at the end of the day. His favorite pass times included reading, playing bridge, golfing, bowling, fishing, and puttering around the camp.
David is survived by his four children, David Smiley, Jr. or Orlando, FL, Steven Smiley and wife Martha of Jesup, GA, Carol Smiley of Durham, NC, and Lynne Sadowski and husband Todd of Orlando, FL; grandson Jacob Sadowski of Orlando, FL; brother Edward Smiley of Scituate, MA; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at 1pm on Friday, October 9, 2015 at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
Arrangements are under the care of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine.
