ALBERT EDWARD SMITH

1920-2014

CANAAN- Albert E. Smith, 94, of Canaan, passed away peacefully on Easter evening with his daughter by his side at the Redington Memorial Home in Skowhegan.

Albert was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Jan. 20, 1920, the son of Samuel Smith and Anna (Scully) Smith.

He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School; he attended City College of New York and N.Y.U.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was selected for O.C.S. He served in the Signal Corp during WWII and continued in the Army Active Reserves retiring in 1964 as a Major.

In 1943 he married Alice Hasler, the love of his life and best friend.

Albert worked at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey for 28 years. After retiring he moved to Maine.

He grew up with a love of music, nature and swimming. When he was 18, he swam across the Hudson River and back. Albert played various instruments and sang in chorus. Everyone enjoyed listening to him sing. Albert kept a song in his heart.

He was involved in many community organizations. He was proud of being a member of the American Legion for 70 years, in which he held a variety of Offices including County Commander. He was a Lifetime certified member of the Standard Engineers Society. In addition, he was an active member in the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, the Maine Philatelic Society and was on the original Board of Directors for the Lake George Regional Park in Canaan.

He is survived by his daughter, Virginia “Ginny” Smith of Canaan, sister, Anne Burley of N.Y., brother, Charles Smith and his wife, Jean, of MA., several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his wife Alice of 58 years, son, William Smith, daughter, Alice Marie Bonner, sister, Catherine Kiley, and brother-in-law, Thomas Burley.

Donations may be made in Albert’s memory to Lake George Regional Park PO Box 896, Skowhegan, ME 04976 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Burial will take place at the Evergreen Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. Arrangements are under the care of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, ME.
